We have developed a mobile charging service platform that brings you someone (a donor) to help you charge your EV when it's not at a charging station. Service availability is maximized by integrating both commercial mobile charging service providers and individual peer-to-peer charging service providers.

Issue

Today, EV drivers must compromise on mobility freedom due to long charging times and limited charging infrastructure. Many urban residents can’t install their own dedicated charging stations at home due to space and power constraints. Even EV drivers that have charging ports at home are anxious about traveling long distances and exploring new areas, especially with young family members.
EV drivers can face a number of different charging issues:
  • EV drivers who live in apartments or condominiums don't have any designated charging outlet to charge their vehicle at home and must regularly charge at public charging stations
  • The EV runs out of battery while going off-road or in other remote areas without public charging infrastructure
  • When EV drivers go out of town, they sometimes can't or don't want to spend time at public charging stations
  • An EV parked in a long-term parking lot for an extended period of time will lose range.

Solution

We have developed a mobile app for iOS and Android that provides charging services to EV owners, wherever they are (at home, at work, out-and-about, etc.). The MoPi platform connects those who need charging (customers) with those who can provide it (donors, who are either companies providing charging services, or gig-workers who enable others to charge - like an Uber driver, but for charging).
This app can ask a donor vehicle with extra energy to help a customer vehicle that requires charging at any location. A special charging cable will be used to transfer energy from the donor vehicle to the customer vehicle.

With this app, consumers can request two different types of mobile charging services:
  1. Scheduling a mobile charging appointment in advance with a charging service company
  2. Requesting an on-demand charging service from other nearby users who have signed up as donors

The first type offers faster charging speed (at least 20 kW) but isn't available right away. For the second type, the charging speed is slower but may be available immediately if donors are nearby. For both types of service, the donor (company or gig-worker) will provide the special charging cable.

You can sign up and use the app as a customer, a donor, or both.
