Bio-inspired coincidence detector for the geolocation of a sound source

Electronics
We have developed a bio-inspired coincidence detector that allows the spatial geolocation (2D/3D) of a sound signal source or a target reflecting a signal, in a quasi-instantaneous way and with low energy cost.

This system can be used in many industrial applications:
  • Leak detection and geolocation in the industry
  • Improvement of noise monitoring on construction sites
  • Improvement of supervision of industrial machinery monitoring and anomaly detection
  • etc.

Solution

Our patented solution is based on a coincidence detector that, just like in the context of neurobiology, helps to distinguish the correlation and occurrence of two signals close in time, which represent the main mechanisms of auditory localization:
- ITD (Interaural Time Difference)
- ILD (Interaural Level Difference)

The interpretation of these metrics in an appropriate processing system allows the geolocation of the sound source.
The advantages of our geolocation detector are mainly:
  • The low energy consumption
Due to the use of transistors below the conduction threshold (on average 200 to 2*10^6 depending on the technology used)

  • The fast, almost instantaneous geolocation
Result on coincidence directly at the end of the parameterized time window (on average 200 times faster than conventional devices)

Our sound geolocation detector can be used in many industrial applications:
  • Leak detection and geolocation in the oil and gas industry
  • Detection and geolocation of air leaks in compressed air networks and industrial compressors
  • Improvement of noise monitoring on construction sites
  • Improved supervision of industrial machinery monitoring and anomaly detection
  • etc.
