Sealant technology in transportation markets

Chemistry
Transportation / Logistics

The silyl modified polymer sealant technology has been growing over the last years offering to the market an improved health safety and environmental solution with better adhesion properties and versatility making it a more practical and cost efficient alternative

Issue

Sealants can be used for all types of sealing and bonding applications in the manufacturing or repair of any kind of vehicles. At key points in the production line, they are used to seal between assembled pieces and to bond panels or windshields to the main structure. The dominant sealant technology so far has been 1k PU, however they do present some drawbacks for users such as HSE concerns, practical aspects and final properties.

Solution

Silyl Modified Polymers (SMP) / Hybrid sealant technology offers the following advantages over the current solutions.

Health, Safety and Environment concerns:
  • Non labeled products
  • Isocyanate and solvent free
  • Can be used without primers

Practical aspect:
  • Faster surface preparation procedure with only cleaning required
  • Strong and versatile adhesion across different substrates
  • Easy to clean and remove from hands, tools or equipment
  • 12 to 18 months storage stability facilitates stocks management

Final properties:
  • Do not yellow while exposed to UV light
  • Can be painted when fresh
  • Stable performance across temperature between -40°C to 120°C

SMPs are overall a more practical, faster, safer and so a more cost efficient solution than 1k PU for the transportation markets.
